Carnival Sunshine: A Comprehensive Review of Cruise Experience
The previous Carnival Destiny had a comprehensive makeover and rebranding in 2012. Becoming Carnival Sunshine as a result of a 49-day huge transformation costing $155 million.Carnival upgraded the ship’s infrastructure. Including the lifts, air conditioners, electrical stations, and washing machines, in addition to the cosmetic upgrades.
One of the busiest Carnival ships, Sunshine isn’t quite a Dream-class ship, but it has nearly every feature of Magic and Breeze. Quick-service sushi, burgers, and burritos; stand-up comedy sets that last twenty minutes; production shows that last thirty minutes. Some of the eateries and bars here include Guy Fieri’s spiky-haired burger joint, a Mexi-Cali burrito joint where you roll your own tortilla. Its two beach bars in the Caribbean called RedFrog and BlueIguana, which serve rum and tequila, respectively.
Two Asian eateries, Bonsai Sushi (a sit-down Japanese restaurant) and Ji Ji (a really exceptional restaurant serving pan-Asian food) are available onboard to balance out these temples to unhealthy eating.
Former designer Joe Farcus’s bright color schemes are replaced with the more subdued designs of Hamburg-based Partner Design. Resulting in a design that is dramatically different from that found on the old Carnival ships.
The color scheme is subdued and uniformly muted from the main dining rooms to the passageways and cabins. more spaces. Such the Fahrenheit 555 corridor on Deck 5, the Piano Bar, Ocean Plaza, and the main dining rooms, could really need more décor because they’re so bland.
The impression that emerges is one of a subtle revolution, where style has triumphed over tactic. It would be difficult to tell that this was even a Carnival ship in several places, like the Library Bar, Java Blue, Havana Bar, Fahrenheit 555, and Ji Ji.
Still, Carnival’s “bread and butter” customers still flock to Sunshine. They’re the laid-back, sociable, budget-conscious cruisers who like to hang out in groups. (Onboard, there is still a constant and unwavering focus on having fun.)
Included with your cruise fare:
Buffet, pizza, Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, and main dining rooms meals as well as certain room service items
Every night, the ship comes alive with live music performances.
Deck parties, comedy events, and all main theater performances.
Access to the Sports Square, mini-golf, and Carnival Waterworks.
The use of the gym, excluding the majority of courses and individual training sessions.
Most routine tasks performed while on board, with a few exceptions.
See a flick by the pool at the Seaside Theater.
Camp Ocean’s kids club offers activities until 10 p.m. for children aged 2–17.
Not included with your cruise fare:
The normal stateroom rate is $13.99 per person, per day, while the suite rate is $15.99 per person, per day.
Automatic 18% gratuity added to all bar and spa purchases.
Cuisine at Bonsai Sushi, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Ji Ji Asian Kitchen, and Cucina del Capitano.
Aside from water, tea, basic coffees, and some of the buffet’s juices, most drinks onboard.
Salon and spa services, as well as access to Cloud 9 Thermal Suite.
The vast majority of group exercise courses and individual trainer sessions.
Excursions to nearby islands.
Internet and Wi-Fi.
Activities such as Win-A-Cruise bingo, the Build-a-Bear workshop, some art and craft classes, and alcohol sampling events.
Embarkation artwork or images.
Purchasing goods while on board.
Kids’ activities at Camp Ocean after hours.
Many North American couples, families, and groups spanning generations attend Carnival. The majority of its customers are Americans, and the average age of its passengers is in their forties.
Carnival Sunshine Dress Code
Daytime: Wearing beachwear or port-appropriate clothing is the standard during the day.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Review
It is puzzling that a cruise company and Jimmy Buffett, a singer-songwriter who amassed a fortune via seaside melodies and icy beverages, did not work together sooner. However, in 2021, Margaritaville at Sea began offering two-day cruises from West Palm Beach to Freeport, Bahamas, on board its inaugural ship, the 1,680-passenger Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.
First things first: There has been a Margaritaville at Sea Paradise for quite some time. From 1991 until 2018, it was known as Costa Classica and sailed for the Italian line. Most recently, it was renamed Costa neoClassica. After acquiring the ship, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line rechristened it the Grand Classica and inserted it into its speciality of offering short, delicious sailings at affordable pricing. Margaritaville at Sea Paradise has an experienced crew that has sailed with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line before.
Everything from the nautically inspired bedding and cushions in the staterooms to the vibrant Margaritaville parrot that now adorns the hull underwent a comprehensive back-to-front restoration as part of the ship’s rebranding. The ship boasts a number of entertaining areas for selfies, such as the Atrium’s enormous sculpture of flip-flops and the back bar’s big margarita mixer, which are sure to be enjoyed by all, Buffett fans included. Five O’Clock Has Sprung Somewhere
This leads us to the following point. During our 2022 cruise, we discovered that Margaritaville at Sea is popular with many more people than just Jimmy Buffett’s devoted fan base, the Parrotheads. According to what we were informed, about 60% of the guests on a typical Margaritaville at Sea voyage are first-time cruisers, and most of them only know Buffett in passing. This was most apparent to us during Jimmy Buffett’s jukebox musical of his greatest hits, which took place during the evening performance. Not everyone on board knew the songs, but others were smiling and tapping their toes energetically as they sang along with fins up.
And so what?
Anything goes as long as you keep it casual, which is part of the Jimmy Buffett/Margaritaville feel. A more immersive experience would have been more appealing to me as a fan of Buffett. On the other hand, I can understand how a heavy Buffett presence could turn off first-time cruisers and, let’s face it, a younger and more varied demographic of guests. Classical Buffett listeners are getting on in years; although Jimmy’s music may seem dated, the majority of his albums came out in the 1970s. It would be far more prudent to devote your attention to palm trees, margaritas, and parrots while minimizing the boat rock.
Whether you’re a seasoned sailor in need of a relaxing retreat or a first-time cruiser wanting to test the waters, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise offers an experience that could just captivate you.
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Deck Plans are Somewhat Confusing; Ship Has What You Need
The deck plan and layout of the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise are telltale signs that it is not a brand new ship. The Port of Indecision buffet is just one example of how the ship’s older facilities are noticeably smaller than those on board more modern ships. People started bringing their food elsewhere on the ship and leaving dirty dishes in lounges distant from the restaurant because it was so impossible to find a seat here.
Ship age is also shown by the little pools. This is just a dip spot; don’t expect anything more. Additionally, navigating the ship from one end to the other might be a bit of a challenge, especially on higher decks where multiple staircases are required for access. Deck 14’s Hangout stood out as an unusually empty room; it resembled a sports bar but had no patrons or bartenders.
The ship may be small in comparison to contemporary megaships, but it more than has enough to offer in terms of onboard entertainment. Because of the short amount of time on board, people are trying to cram as much as possible into the two days, which can make for a hectic and even frenetic atmosphere.
Most Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Rooms Lack Balconies; Bring Extension Cords
Prior to the ship’s relaunch in 2022, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise underwent a complete renovation that included the addition of tropical furnishings and accessories to each room. There is a bright and cheery vibe, and the beds are soft.
Fortunately, there are only ten rooms on the whole ship that have a balcony. You need to reserve a Grand Terrace Suite if you desire outside real estate, as even junior rooms only have portholes. The ship’s utilities are another place where it looks old; the refurbishment didn’t install enough American outlets and USB connections that modern, always-plugged-in vacationers desire. Be sure to bring along an extra set of plugs and an extension cord.
However, considering that you’ll be in port for one of the two days of this brief trip, you won’t have much time to relax in your stateroom anyhow.
Food on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is Adequate for a Short Getaway
If you’re looking for the best of Margaritaville at Sea Paradise’s cuisine, you may have to leave the bustling Port of Indecision buffet. Slices of pizza with fairly common toppings, like pepperoni, are free and delicious at Frank & Lola’s pizza counter, while full pies cost more.
We also had a nice meal at the JWB Steakhouse, which charges an additional price. (A popular option, the License to Chill package includes a meal, ten drinks, a wine tasting, and other benefits, and many travelers take advantage of this). With adequate menu options to suit a wide range of preferences, the included Fins dining area was reminiscent of the main dining room on any cruise ship.
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Has No Real Dress Code; Come As You Are
The fact that Margaritaville at Sea Paradise does not have a strict dress code is something we thought was really attractive, particularly for first-time cruisers. Shorts are acceptable attire on the whole ship, and there is no such thing as formal night. things’s entertaining to see how different people react to different situations; some went all out for the club, while others kept things casual.
Margaritaville at Sea’s License to Chill Package Gives You Drinks, Other Perks
Although the fare at Margaritaville at Sea is cheap at first glance, there are other less apparent expenses to consider, as is the case with any cheap ticket. For starters, there are port fees, gasoline taxes, and gratuities to consider. Additional fees apply for WiFi, and valet parking is required for drivers going to the port. Beverages and soft drinks are not included of the package. In the Bahamas, shore excursions cost extra, and there is no public transportation available to take you anywhere from the Freeport terminal to the sights you want to see.
Costs might be bundled together in certain packages. A bathrobe in your room, a wine tasting the day you board, two premium coffees and pastries at the Margaritaville Coffee Shop, a wristband with ten drinks, a $150 spa credit, dinner for two at the JWB Steakhouse (with the option to have sparkling wine and breakfast there), a wine tasting for three99 dollars (for two people), and a visit to the spa are all part of the License to Chill package.
For $99, you can avoid the check-in chaos at the Palm Beach Terminal, get two people’s worth of Wi-Fi, and get reserved seats at a number of venues—all without drinking.
Margaritaville at Sea’s Cruise & Stay Program
Margaritaville at Sea departs from the Bahamas in a unique way; instead of staying on the ship, guests can spend the night at an all-inclusive resort on Grand Bahama Island. The Viva Wyndham and the Grand Lucayan are two of the partner resorts that you can select from for either two or four days.
Included in your cost when you buy a package through the ship are transports from the Freeport port to the resort and back again. Keep in mind that a passport, and not merely a birth certificate, will be required if you go this route.
Included with your cruise fare:
Buffet fare at the Port of Indecision, pizza by the slice, and meals at the Fins restaurant.
Some beverages, including water, tea, and coffee
The majority of shipboard entertainment and activities
Daytime children’s program
Access to the pool and fitness center
Not included with your cruise fare:
Caffeine, carbonated drinks, and alcoholic beverages
Excursions to nearby islands
Charges for port operations
The port offers valet parking, which is necessary for drivers.
Shuttle service to all Grand Bahama sights
Who is Onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise?
Rest assured, if this is your first cruise, you are not alone. In fact, it is not uncommon for up to 60% of the passengers to be first-timers. People from all around South Florida and the state of Florida who can drive comfortably are drawn to West Palm Beach by the low fares and the short time commitment. There are a few catches to this cheap fare, though; you’ll still have to pay for port fees and mandatory valet parking if you drive. However, the Heroes Sail Free deal does provide a good discount for active military, first responders, law enforcement, and educators.
Guests on these two-day cruises range in age from young adults to retirees, and the ship’s varied clientele reflects this diversity. While there was no LGBTQ or solo meetup on board, the Friends of Bill W. group meets every day.
Although you can sail with a birth certificate instead of a passport on closed-loop cruises (where you embark and depart in the U.S.), we suggest the latter. The terminal saw longer arrival and departure waits because many passengers on this cruise could only provide birth certificates. Passport holders will be granted expedited clearance at customs.
